Small world

Small things can look intimidating when you come closer. Look at the jaws (mandibles) of these leaf-cutter ants in Panama!

Humpback whale

A humpback whale diving down at Stellwagen Bank. Stellwagen Bank is a huge National Marine Sanctuary off the coast of Massachusetts. It is a managed area, and a recent report shows that the top-level predators in the area such as halibut and swordfish have significantly declined in numbers compared to 100 years ago, which is related to the unsustainable practices in fishing.

Rio Chagres

The Rio Chagres in Panama at 7am, walking to work. Some days when I would cross it I would see huge crocodiles swimming underneath the bridge. In the evening, even full body Mosquito protection didn't help.
But the mornings were special, when the sun was rising and life was awakening again after the night.

Mangrove sunset

Sunset over a small Mangrove island in Florida. It would be silent except the occasional splashing sound of a stingray coming across the surface or small fish that jump out of the water trying to escape their predators.

Furniture factory

Driving past a small furniture store near Fort Portal, Uganda. People settle along both sides of the few paved roads in the area, sometimes using them as space to dry food, display goods, and in the evening you can see groups of people gathering on the warm asphalt to chat. The black ring comes from an ill-fitting sun protector on the lens of my old camera.

Old tree

Each week, I will share a photograph that I took somewhere around the world and its meaning. When I took this pic it was about 7:30 in the morning and I walked along a small road in Panama to work. Right and left of that small road, shrubby vegetation sheltered the forest from view. This is what I saw to my left when I crossed a bridge over a small stream. Isn’t it beautiful seeing the sun rise behind that old tree?
